Industrial steamers (rented from Roofmaster or similar). Heat cable systems (HeatTape Pro, EasyHeat). Blown-in cellulose or fiberglass insulation. Spray foam at attic air leaks. Soffit baffles. Ridge vents.
How much does ice dam removal cost?
Steam removal: $400–$1,800 depending on dam size and roof access. Most NYC single-family ice dams run $600–$1,000 for steam removal. Permanent prevention (insulation/ventilation upgrades): $1,500–$5,000. Heat cable installation: $25–$45 per linear foot.
Why do I get ice dams every winter?
Three causes, almost always: (1) inadequate attic insulation letting heat escape and melt rooftop snow, (2) poor attic ventilation trapping warm air, (3) air leaks from living space into attic. The fix is permanent — once your attic is properly insulated and ventilated, ice dams stop forming.
Will salt or chemical de-icers melt ice dams?
Calcium chloride pellets in pantyhose can create channels for water to drain through, but it's a band-aid. Rock salt damages roofing materials and corrodes flashing. We don't recommend chemicals as a primary fix.
Should I knock the icicles down myself?
No — extremely dangerous and the icicles aren't the problem. They're a symptom of an ice dam underneath. Hitting an ice dam with an axe or shovel destroys shingles and gutters and creates a much bigger leak. Always use steam.
Will homeowners insurance cover ice dam damage?
Most NY policies cover the resulting interior water damage. Some cover the cost of removing the ice dam itself under "loss mitigation." Damage to the roof itself from improper DIY removal is typically NOT covered.
Are heat cables a permanent fix?
No — they're a workaround when proper insulation/ventilation isn't feasible. They use electricity continuously during winter (~$30–$80/month) and only last 5–10 years. Better long-term: fix the attic.
