Gutters explained

A gutter system collects water from the roof edge and directs it through downspouts to a safe discharge point. It works only if the gutters are pitched toward outlets, firmly fastened to solid material, sized for the roof area and kept clear of debris. In dense New York blocks, where runoff can damage neighbors, sidewalks and masonry, correct drainage matters even more. Options and materials

Aluminum gutters

Lightweight, rust-resistant and available in many colors, often formed on site as seamless runs. A common choice for houses and small buildings across the city.

Copper and specialty metals

Longer-lasting and traditional in appearance, used on period buildings where the look and the durability justify the added material cost and the extra skill needed to install them.

Built-in and box gutters

Gutters set into the roof edge or cornice on older buildings. Repair and relining require careful waterproofing and detailing, since a leak here can run down the facade.

Downspouts and leaders

New or repaired vertical drains, extensions and connections that move water away from walls, sidewalks and foundations and into a proper discharge point. We explain the tradeoffs before you decide.

Cleaning and guard options

Debris removal and flushing, plus gutter guards where leaves are a persistent problem. Guards reduce clogging but still need to be checked from time to time.

What affects the price

Linear footage

The total length of gutter and the number of downspouts is the main driver of material and labor, so larger roofs naturally cost more to fit.

Material

Aluminum, steel, copper and other metals vary a lot in material cost and in the skill needed to form and install them cleanly and durably.

Building height

Multi-story buildings need taller ladders, lifts or scaffolding, which adds setup time and safety requirements compared with work on a low roofline.

Fascia and substrate condition

Rotted fascia or backing must be repaired for new gutters to hold. The extent is confirmed once the old gutters come off and the wood is exposed.

Repair versus replacement

Cleaning and re-pitching cost less than new runs, but they are only sensible if the existing gutters are structurally sound and not rusted through.

Drainage complexity

Routing leaders around entrances, connecting to underground drains and working close to neighbors all add detailing time to the job.

Frequently asked questions

How often should gutters be cleaned?

At least twice a year, typically after the leaves fall and again in spring. Properties with many overhanging trees may need it more often. Clogged gutters overflow, rot the fascia, and can contribute to ice buildup at the roof edge in winter.

Do gutter guards eliminate cleaning?

No. Guards reduce the amount of debris that gets in, but fine material, seeds and roofing grit can still collect. They help in leafy locations, but the system still needs an occasional check and cleaning to keep working properly. We are happy to go over this with you in person.

Why does my gutter overflow even when it is clean?

Common reasons are poor pitch, undersized gutters, blocked downspouts or too few outlets for the roof area. We check slope and capacity and correct the actual cause instead of only cleaning out the gutters again. Just ask and we will explain it in plain language.

Can you repair the old box gutters on my brownstone?

Yes, in many cases. Built-in gutters are repaired or relined with compatible waterproofing and flashing. Work on landmark buildings may be subject to review, and we can explain what applies to your property before the work begins.

Where should downspouts discharge?

Away from the foundation, neighbors and walkways, either to a proper drain connection, splash block or extension. NYC rules also govern how roof water may be discharged, and we plan the downspout routing with those requirements in mind. We are happy to go over this with you in person.

Can gutter work be combined with a roof job?

Yes, and it is often a good idea. Replacing gutters along with the roof lets the edge metal and drainage be coordinated, and avoids damaging brand-new roofing later when gutters need to be removed or reworked. Just ask and we will explain it in plain language.
