How much does a Velux skylight installation cost in NYC?
Fixed Velux: $1,800–$3,500 installed. Manual venting Velux: $2,800–$4,800. Solar-powered Velux: $3,500–$6,500 (qualifies for 30% federal tax credit). Includes the skylight unit, flashing kit, framing, install, and interior drywall finish.
Why is my skylight leaking?
Top causes: failed flashing (most common — usually from a roof installer who didn't know how to flash a skylight properly), cracked sealant around the curb, old plastic dome that's warped or split, ice dam pushing water up under the unit, broken glass seal showing as condensation between panes.
Can a leaking skylight be repaired or does it need replacement?
If the unit itself is sound and only the flashing failed, we can re-flash for $400–$900. If the curb is rotted, the glass seal is broken (foggy between panes), or the unit is over 20 years old, replacement is the right call. We give you a straight answer.
Are solar Velux skylights worth it?
Yes if you want a venting skylight. Solar Velux skylights qualify for the 30% federal Residential Clean Energy Credit, no electrical wiring needed, rain sensor closes them automatically, and remote-controlled. The tax credit covers most of the cost difference vs manual venting.
Will a skylight increase my home value?
Yes — properly installed skylights typically return 70–80% of cost at resale, and they make dark rooms much more livable. They're especially valuable in NYC brownstones where light is at a premium.
