Will my homeowners insurance cover roof damage?
In most cases, yes — if the damage was caused by a sudden event (storm, falling tree, hail, fire). Insurance generally does NOT cover wear-and-tear, age-related deterioration, or pre-existing damage. We document storm damage thoroughly to maximize approval likelihood.
How does the roof insurance claim process work?
Step 1: We come out for free post-storm inspection and document everything with photos and a written report. Step 2: You file the claim with your insurance company. Step 3: The insurance adjuster comes to inspect — we meet them on-site to ensure they see all the damage. Step 4: Insurance approves and issues payment. Step 5: We complete the work and you pay only your deductible.
How long do I have to file a roof insurance claim?
Most NY homeowners insurance policies require claims be filed within 1 year of the damage event. Don't wait — file ASAP. The longer you wait, the harder it is to prove storm damage vs wear-and-tear.
Do you handle the insurance paperwork?
Yes — we provide all documentation: written damage assessments, itemized repair estimates, photos, drone footage if needed, and we meet your adjuster on-site. We don't file the claim FOR you (only you can do that), but we make it as easy as possible.
What if my insurance denies the claim?
We help you appeal. Common reasons for initial denial: insufficient documentation (we fix this), claim of wear-and-tear (we provide evidence of storm event), or overlooking damage (we re-inspect with adjuster). Many initial denials are overturned on appeal.
How much will my deductible be?
Standard NY homeowners deductibles range from $500 to $2,500. Hurricane/named-storm deductibles can be higher (often 1–5% of dwelling coverage, sometimes thousands). Check your policy declarations page before storm season.
What storms cause covered damage?
In NY: hurricanes (Sandy, Ida), nor'easters, severe thunderstorms with hail or high winds, falling trees from storms, ice dams (sometimes covered, sometimes not — depends on policy). We assess damage from any sudden weather event.
Should I sign a contract before insurance pays?
You should sign an estimate (so we can begin work after approval), but be careful with "assignment of benefits" (AOB) contracts that give the contractor direct access to your insurance payout. We don't require AOB — you receive your insurance check and pay us as work progresses.
What if a tree falls on my roof?
Step 1: get to safety. Step 2: call us — we'll come tarp it within 2 hours to prevent further damage. Step 3: file the claim. Step 4: we coordinate tree removal with a tree service if needed. Step 5: we complete the roof repair or replacement once insurance approves.
Do insurance companies prefer specific contractors?
They CAN'T require you to use specific contractors. You always have the right to choose your roofer. Insurance "preferred" contractors often work for the insurance company's benefit, not yours. Use a contractor who works for YOU — that's us.
