Ice Dam Prevention & Damage Repair

Ice Dam Prevention & Damage Repair in NYC

Removing an ice dam clears the ice, but it does not fix why it formed or repair the damage it caused. This service targets both. East NYC Roofing, in business 20 years, corrects the heat-loss and ventilation problems behind ice dams and repairs damaged roofing, flashing and gutters across the five boroughs, Nassau and Westchester.

  • 20 years in business
  • 10-year warranty on replacements
  • Within 2 hours for leaks
  • Free written estimate

Problems this solves

  • Ice dams forming at the eaves every winter
  • Icicles and thick ice along gutters
  • Water stains on ceilings and exterior walls after thaws
  • Shingles lifted, cracked or missing at the roof edge
  • Wet or compressed insulation in the attic
  • Gutters pulled loose or bent by ice weight
  • Rotted fascia, soffit or roof sheathing at the eaves
  • Mold or musty odors in the attic
  • Rooms below the roof edge that stay cold or drafty

Ice Dam Prevention & Damage Repair explained

Ice dams form when heat escaping from the living space warms the roof deck, melting snow that then refreezes at the cold eaves. The ice builds into a ridge that traps meltwater, which can be forced up under shingles and into the house. The lasting fix addresses the cause: air sealing the ceiling, adding or correcting insulation, and providing balanced attic ventilation so the roof stays uniformly cold. Damage repair covers what the water has already done, including replacing wet sheathing, shingles, flashing and gutters, and installing a self-sealing waterproof membrane at the eaves. This is separate from ice dam removal, which only clears existing ice.

Options and materials

Air sealing and insulation review

Locating and sealing air leaks at the attic floor and checking insulation depth so less heat reaches the roof deck.

Attic ventilation correction

Adding or correcting soffit, ridge or other vents so cold air flows under the roof deck and keeps it evenly cold.

Eave waterproof membrane

A self-sealing underlayment at the eaves and valleys that helps block meltwater that backs up under roofing.

Roof and flashing repair

Replacing damaged shingles, flashings, drip edge and rotted sheathing where ice and water have gotten in.

Gutter and fascia repair

Re-hanging or replacing gutters and repairing fascia or soffit damaged by ice weight and moisture.

Our process

  1. Inspect inside and outWe look at the roof edge, gutters, attic insulation, ventilation and ceilings to understand why ice is forming and where water has entered.
  2. Written estimateA free written estimate separates cause fixes (air sealing, ventilation, insulation) from damage repairs (roofing, gutters, interior-adjacent work).
  3. Dry out and open upWet materials are identified, and damaged shingles, sheathing and edge components are removed where needed.
  4. Correct the causeWe improve ventilation and coordinate air sealing and insulation work so heat loss to the roof deck is reduced.
  5. Rebuild the eavesNew sheathing, waterproof membrane at the eaves, drip edge, shingles and flashing are installed to restore the roof edge.
  6. Gutters and reviewGutters and fascia are repaired, the site is cleaned up, and we explain what to watch for during the next freeze-thaw cycle.

What affects the price

Extent of water damage

Minor shingle repairs cost far less than replacing wet sheathing, fascia and sections of roofing along the eaves.

Ventilation changes

Adding soffit and ridge vents or correcting blocked ventilation changes material and labor depending on the roof design.

Insulation and air sealing

Scope depends on attic access, existing insulation and the number of air leaks found in the ceiling plane.

Length of roof edge

Houses with long or complex eaves, valleys and dormers need more waterproof membrane and detail work.

Gutter condition

Bent or detached gutters may need replacement instead of re-hanging, which increases materials.

Roof age and type

Older roofs may be better replaced than patched, and some materials need special handling at the eaves.

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from ice dam removal?
Ice dam removal clears existing ice to stop active leaks. Prevention and repair finds why the ice formed, such as heat loss or poor ventilation, and fixes damage already done. Many homeowners need removal first and then this longer-term work.
What actually causes ice dams?
Warm air escaping into the attic heats the roof deck, snow melts and refreezes at the cold eaves, forming a ridge of ice. Water backs up behind it and can leak under roofing. Air sealing, insulation and ventilation address the root cause.
Will a new roof stop ice dams?
Not by itself. A new roof with an eave waterproof membrane resists leaks better, but if heat keeps escaping into the attic, ice can still form. The best results combine proper roofing with air sealing, insulation and ventilation.
Do heat cables fix the problem?
They can create channels for meltwater in trouble spots, but they treat the symptom and use electricity. We view them as a supplement at most, and recommend correcting the underlying heat loss and ventilation first.
Can you repair interior water damage?
We repair the roof, sheathing, flashing, gutters and exterior components. Ceilings, drywall and paint are separate trades, though we can document the roof-side cause, which may help with your insurance discussions.
Can insurance help with ice dam damage?
Coverage depends on your policy and the circumstances. We can provide inspection findings and photos to support your claim, and our insurance claim help service can explain the process. We do not guarantee any outcome.
