Siding explained

Siding is the exterior cladding of a house. It sheds water and provides the visible finish, but the real protection is the layers behind it: a weather-resistant barrier, flashing at windows, doors, and joints, and sound sheathing. Replacing siding is a chance to fix those hidden layers. A good siding job starts with removing the old material, inspecting the sheathing for rot, repairing it, installing the barrier and flashing, and then fastening new siding so it can expand and contract. Rushing over old siding or skipping flashing is the reason many siding jobs fail early.

Frequently asked questions

Can new siding go over old siding?

Sometimes, but we usually recommend removing old siding so we can inspect the sheathing and install proper flashing and a weather barrier. Covering over problems can hide rot and cause bigger repairs later.

How do I know if I need to replace all the siding?

If damage is limited and the siding can be matched, repair may be enough. Widespread cracking, warping, rot, or an unavailable match can make a full replacement the better choice. An inspection shows which applies.

Why is flashing important with siding?

Water will find its way behind any siding eventually, especially at windows, doors, and joints. Flashing and a weather barrier direct that water out. Without them, rot can develop inside the wall.

Will new siding lower my energy bills?

New siding by itself does not insulate much, though a tighter wall assembly and added insulation can reduce drafts. We do not promise a specific savings amount.

Do I need a permit to replace siding?

It depends on the building and scope. Some siding work and scaffolding can involve DOB or local permits, and landmarked buildings may restrict materials and appearance. We tell you what we expect up front.

Can you match my existing siding?

We try. Older siding may be discontinued or faded, so an exact match is not always possible. We will tell you where a repair may be visible and discuss options such as replacing a full wall.
